Shared Readings

Question Song
April 13-17
(to the tune of Oh My Darling Clementine)
Oh I wonder, Oh I wonder,
Oh I wonder while I read.
All good readers ask deep questions
And they wonder while they read.

There are thin ones,
There are thin ones,
That you ask and then you look.
You'll find the answer to the question,
Right there in the book.

There are thick ones,
There are thick ones,
That even when the book is read,
The answer's not in the words,
And you answer it with your head!

February 16-20
He Had a Dream
“I have a dream!”
“I have a dream!”
These were the words
Of Martin Luther King.
What was his dream?
What was his dream?
Tell us the dream
Of Martin Luther King.

Dr. King wished,
Dr. King prayed
That one day all people
Would live unafraid.
Dr. King cared
For blacks and for whites.
He wanted all people
To share equal rights.

Repeat verse one

Dr King marched,
Dr. King spoke
Of a world full of justice
For all kinds of folk.
Dr. King cared
For me and for you.
By working together,

His dream can come true.

Infer Song
Tune: My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean

Sometimes when you're reading a story
The words are not all there for you.
So being a good book detective
Will help you find any clue!

Chorus Infer, Infer!
Filling in what's not in the book
Infer, Infer!
It's taking a much closer look!

Some authors leave clues in the pictures,
Some authors leave clues in the text,
They give you just part of the story,
And want you to fill in the rest.

So when you are reading a story
Be careful to read what is there
But then figure out what is missing
Now you are inferring with flair!

January 12-16
The Snowman
Roll a snowball large, then make one of middle size.
Roll a snowball small, use little lumps of coal for eyes.
Place a carrot for a nose,
and an old hat upon his head.
for a necktie tie around his neck a scarf of red.
Ca corncob pipe goes in his mouth, and some buttons along his vest.
There he stands so round and fat.
This snowman, he's the best!

January 5-10
Recipe for a Dragon
Take a head as bright as the moon,
A body as red as mars
And spikes pointed like a pyramid.
Add scales overlapping like an eagle's feather,
Wings as green as the ocean
And a tail winding like a river.
Decorate with eyes shining like stars,
Teeth as cold as icicles
And claws as dangerous as daggers.
Stir in breath as fiery as a volcano,
Put in a very hot oven
And bake for a hundred years.
You have made a dragon!
BEWARE!

December 8-12
Visualization Song
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

When my teacher reads a book,
Then my brain begins to look.
Seeing pictures in my head,
As the story's being read.
Making pictures me and you
You can think some pictures too

November 24-28
Friendly Letter Song
(to the tune of “Eency Weancy Spider”)

I am a friendly letter.
My heading’s at the top.
Slide over to the right,
Write the date and then I stop.
And then I put “Dear Someone”,
With a comma at the end.
Next I go write the body,
My message to my friend.
I choose a closing like “Your Friend”
Or Love forever more.
And after that, a comma,
Of that I’m very sure.
I sign my first and last name,
And now I’m at the end.
And my perfect friendly letter,

I’m ready now to send!

November 10-14
Little Poppy
Little poppy given to me,
Help me keep Canada safe and free.
I'll wear a little poppy,
As red as red can be,
To show that I remember,
Those who fought for me.

October 27-31
5 Little Jack O’Lanterns

5 little jack o’lanterns sitting on a gate.
The first one said,
“Oh my! It’s getting late!”
The second one said,
“There are witches in the air!”
The third one said,
“But we don’t care!”
The fourth one said,
“Let’s run and run and run!”
And the fifth one said,
“It’s just Halloween fun!”
Then, “Woohoo!” went the wind,
and OUT went the light!

And the 5 little jack o’lanterns rolled out of sight.

Connections Song
Tune: On top of spaghetti

I'm reading a story and my brain says “Hey!”
This story reminds me of the other day.
It's called a connection-
From text to self,
The story reminds me, I've done this myself.

I'm reading a story and my brain says “Look!”
This story reminds me of that other book.
It's called a connection-
From text to text.
My brain remembers and does a quick check.

I'm reading a story and my brain says “Wow!”
This story reminds me of news happening now.
It's called a connection-
From text to world.

It makes my brain flutter, sputter and whirl.

October 14-October 17
Connections Song
Tune: Brush your Teeth Song

When I read a story and my brain says "Hey"
This part reminds me of the other day!
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da

When I read a story and my brain say "Whoa!"
This part reminds of my good friend Joe.
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da

When I read a story and my brain says "Cool"
This part reminds me of my school.
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da

When I read a story and my brain says "Look!"
This part reminds me of another book.
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da

When I read a story and my brain says "Wow!"
This part reminds me of my grandpa's cow
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da
It's called connect- da da da da da da da da da

October 6-October 9
My Apple Tree
My apple tree in winter,
Looks cold and brown and bare.
The leaves have left its branches,
And snow is resting there.

My apple tree in springtime,
Grows tiny leaves of green
And beautiful pink flowers,
The nicest I have seen.

My apple tree in summer,
Is full of leaves, you know.
I count the small, green apples,
And wait for them to grow.

My apple tree in autumn
Is really best of all.
Apples now are round and red,
And they begin to fall.

September 29-October 3
Schema Song
Tune: Are you Sleeping, Brother John
Schema, schema
Schema, schema
What I know
Watch it grow
I can take a good look.
Then it grows,
I can read a new book.
Schema grows.

September 15-19
Punctuation Poem

The period is a busy man,
A small round traffic cop.
He blocks the helter-skelter words,
And brings them to a stop.

The question mark's a tiny girl,
She's small but very wise.
She asks too many questions,
For a person of her size.

The exclamation mark's an elf,
Who is easily excited.
When children laugh or cry or scream,
It's then he's most delighted.

Of all the punctuation folk,
I like the comma best.
For when I'm getting out of breath,
He lets me take a rest.

I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
By Dr. Seuss (adapted)

I can read in red. I can read in blue.
I can read in pickle colour too.
I can read in bed, and in purple and in brown.
I can read in a circle and upside down.
I can read with my left eye.
I can read with my right.
I can read Mississippi with ease at first sight.
There are so many things you can learn about,
But you’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.
The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
So that’s why I tell you to keep your eyes wide,
Keep them wide open,
At least on one side!
